GET YOUR LICENSE
RECOGNISED

Hit the ground earning by getting your interstate or New Zealand licence recognised. Qualified guards from ouside the NT can apply for Mutual Recognition of their equivalent licence, meaning you can start working as soon as you arrive.

You can apply online or print out a paper form (Word, PDF).

If you’re applying on paper, after you’ve filled out all the fields, make sure you attach the supporting documents, including:

  • Front and back colour scans/photocopies of your current equivalent security licence.
  • Colour scans/photocopies of your photo ID with your DOB on it (e.g. driver’s licence, passport, evidence of age card, working with children card etc)
  • A passport-sized photo.
If you’re submitting an online application, you can upload photos/scans of these before completing the other sections of the application process.

Fees vary depending on whether you’re applying for a single (Security officer or Crowd controller) or combined type, and the licence term (1, 2, or 3 years).

Fee information available here.

We recommend getting the full 3 years combined security officer and crowd controller licence (if your equivalent licence allows it). It’s better value for money and puts off the hassle of having to renew for as long as possible.

You can lodge and pay for our application in a few ways:

  • Online – It’s easy to register for an account, and complete your application through the Licensing NT website. After you’ve submitted, you’ll be issued with an invoice that can be paid via BPAY. Alternatively, you can arrange to pay over the phone by credit or debit card (Visa or Mastercard).

  • In person – If you can get to Darwin, you can lodge your application in person at the Occupational Licensing office – Darwin Corporate Park, Ground Floor, Building 3, 631 Stuart Highway Berrimah. You can pay cash, cheque, EFTPOS, or by credit card.

I love everything about my job and working here in Central Australia. I get to help people every day, and see the positive effect my work has on the community. My bosses are very good to me and have become like family. Moving to the Northern Territory from Victoria meant I could work more hours and make a lot more money - over twice what I made before. I encourage qualified security guards or people looking for a start to make the move.
Chikom Agoth
Guard with Talice Security

In 2008, I approached Tennant Security for a job despite having no prior security experience. They were instrumental in helping me obtain my security license and provided valuable on-the-job training, as well as continuous employment opportunities.

In 2020, I relocated to Alice Springs with my family, taking on a security in security role with Talice. Currently, I work as a Team Leader at the Alice Springs Hospital, overseeing a small team of 3-4 guards. I would encourage anyone considering a career change to explore the Security Industry in Central Australia, as it offers diverse opportunities and job stability.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

All applicants must:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Complete the relevant training course.
  • Hold a current first aid certificate.

Find more information on the NT Government website.

There are 2 main types of security work covered in NT legislation:

  1. Security officers: Mainly do static security work, like guarding entrances to buildings, and mobile patrol work, like driving around to check in on business assets and respond to alarms.
  1. Crowd controllers: Ensure the safety of people in public venues, events, and on licensed premises (where alcohol is served).

Successful applicants for our free training will study for their Certificate II in Security Operations (CPP20218). If successfully completed, you can apply for a dual licence as a Security Officer and Crowd Controller, giving you more options for your security career.

Good question. There are 3 main services you’ll have contact with:

  • Occupational Licensing: The NT Government body responsible for assessing applications, issuing, and renewing security licences. If there’s an issue with an incomplete or incorrectly filled out application form, they will get in touch and to help you if they can.

CONTACT DETAILS:

  • SAFE NT (NT Police): Part of the NT Police and emergency services, they are the body responsible for conducting criminal history check and fingerprinting of applicants. They forward the results of your Police fingerprint check to Occupational Licensing with any relevant disclosures relating to criminal history.

CONTACT DETAILS:

  • Territory Business Centres: A one-stop-shop for your licensing related enquiries and paperwork, Business Centres service remote and regional NT (areas outside of Darwin). If you’re planning to apply for or have your existing Security licence renewed after relocating to Central Australia, you can get submit your application and get advice from your local Business Centre.

If you haven’t done any training before and are just getting started in your security career, you’ll most likely start by completing a CPP20218 Certificate II in security operations. This is the current industry standard, containing 14 units of competency that enable you to apply for a dual Security Office and Crowd Controller licence.

You’ll also need to hold a current HLTAID011 or HLTAID003 first aid certificate.

If you studied in the period from 2013-2019, you likely received the CPP20212 standard (since superseded). Under current NT law, you can use these qualifications towards a Security licence. The type of licence you are eligible for depends on which competencies you completed.
